5Rock Solid
By John B.
First ImpressionsFirst, this is not a small tent. It would be backpackable between two folks not trying to set any light weight records, but this is not a two-person super-light tent. At 10 pounds plus floorsaver its likely more well suited to car camping, canoeing, and trekking with three-plus people. I've owned several tents, the majority from Eureka, and have always been impressed with their workmanship and design. I have camped several times in the original Timberline. I wasn't impressed the first night, but later found out that the person who set it up didn't stake out the fly causing condensation to form where the fly touched the tent body. A few stakes later the second night was fine and dry. The Timberline name and pedigree sold me to some degree. With that said.I'm fairly convinced I could stand on top of this thing. I read other reviews on other sites about the SQ frame and am very pleased that they were not exaggerating. It is rock solid. I'm very glad to have gone with the outfitter version as well. At every seam and buckle you can see and feel the upgrade in material. The 210 denier floor is also a huge plus especially if you have a dog or particularly destructive camping partner or need gear that won't get cut up on that sharp stone you missed before you set up your tent. The upgrade of materials is worth the premium, period. As I'm more used to dome-style tents the first setup was not immediately intuitive, but not irrational. As I had similarly read in some other reviews the spreader pole in the middle of the tent was not a dream to insert, especially into the fly pockets, but once you step into the tent the bonus interior room is impressive. I suspect that this will get easier with time as the seams and materials stretch a bit.As always with any tent the fly will be mostly cosmetic unless you stake it out. I was a little perplexed that Eureka had included plenty of stakes (this is seldom the case with new tents) and they were a mixture of high-density plastic and aluminum. This isn't a big deal just a little confusing. The improved angle of the fly poles at the window and door end of the tent makes entry much easier. This new design means you mostly just have to duck to enter not crouch. A big creature comfort indeed. As I said above the interior is much improved and very livable. The extra space created by the spreader pole means that the 4'10" height is functional right to the top. The spreader polo also makes the tent walls a bit more vertical helping if you were using a cot. Pockets are at every corner and the D-rings for an interior clothes line is one of those small details that makes all the difference. The very large window and window/door on opposite ends of the tent provide good cross ventilation. What would I change you ask? I'm willing to pony up for a vestibule... Oh its not even an option on the Outfitter. Boo.Final word is if you need a bombproof tent, aren't counting ounces, need or want the option of 4 season camping, looking for room for two with real comfort or three to four with livability, and don't mind paying for what you get, here's your tent.UPDATE: 5/19/2011Camped in the tent three times or so now.Ventilation is very good with the even with constant rain. High humidity areas in summer could be an issue but for temperate climates this tent breathes well even in adverse weather. The windows at each end allow for a great cross breeze. The first camp trip was cold and crisp in February. Winds gusting upward of 35 mph and sustained not far from it. The tent was placed in an unshielded open field. The winds were fairly consistent in one direction so appropriate orientation of the tent helped it shed wind. The tent barely moved. I've been in dome tents that turned inside out like an umbrella (unharmed but collapsed none-the-less) in high winds. Granted 35 mph is no squall, but the most troubling thing was the noise the wind created against the fly. This was a bit noisy and made falling asleep a chore. Otherwise the tent did fine. To respond to the poster addressing A-frames in high wind. Yes, they are not made for high wind applications. If you regularly expect your gear to withstand high winds, an A-frame is likely not the right choice. As A-frame's go, this one handles wind exceptionally well... for an A-frame. Use the right tool for the right job.The second trip was weather uneventful. No wind. No rain. I just as easily could have spent the night in a hammock. The third trip (May 6) had very significant dew the first night. I unthinkingly kept the windows closed and the tent did not breathe properly so we had slight condensation by morning. The rain began in the afternoon. Winds were low but the rain was consistent and soaking. The tent shed water well and didn't gather any moisture inside. The rain continued until the next morning. With the windows open halfway the ventilation problem was solved. The tent stayed completely dry. Job well done. One improvement to suggest to Eureka. Make the screen window on the door open in the same pattern as the window on the opposite side. This would allow even better cross ventilation during rain so the window can be opened from the top downward.I'll update the review further when I get some severe weather to report on.
