Nothing is perfect , but this tent comes close!,

June 4, 2012Last year I would have rated this tent at 4 stars with the minor nitpicks being zipper grabs and ..............I guess that's it. Last season the tent was used for 3 separate camping trips with rain occurring at each point during each trip. The tent performed flawless and stayed dry each time. My original set up includes the optional vestibule and footprint and all I have added since is a additional 8' x 10' tarp for the ground which I will get to in a few.The design of this tent is simple and totally effective in it's application with the only must in its use being that you MUST use ALL the guy lines as supplied to enjoy the full benefit of the design. This past weekend began the 2012 camping season with my son's Cub Scout Camporee. The event probably had about 150 tents ranging from box store specials to Scout endorsed Eureka timberlines to the "banquet " sized Coleman "Weather Masters" complete with hinged doors. The forecast was for heavy rain later in the 1st day of the event so I made sure to get there early to set up in the dry. The high winds of the day were a omen of what was to come as I had to have my wife help me pitch the tent for the first time as i had been able to go it alone the previous times. Setting up in grass as I did the previous year I had learned while water did not penetrate the floor or footprint, grass does retain a lot of water which made for an uneasy "waterbed" feeling on the floor of the tent. This did not happen when I set up on dirt or sand so I used the extra tarp mentioned earlier as a second base under the footprint to offset this problem makings sure that tent footprint overlapped it at all points. Next I properly guyed out tent which has all of its guy points on full coverage rain fly. There are extra loops on sides of fly at bottom which do not need to be used in most conditions, but with the the wind gusting at 30mph that day I decided to throw some lines on just in case. The rain had not arrived at lights out time but was confirmed on its way, so I staked the remaining 2 guy lines and off to bed my Son and I went.Ninety minutes later It came , torrential rain ( over an inch a hour) with winds gusting at 30 to 35 mph. The tent rippled, contracted and expanded a little and rocked fore and aft a bit but was rock solid stable to the point that I was more concerned with the trees surrounding us than the fabric shelter we were sleeping in. Next morning revealed that in our immediate group of about 30 tents, some were flooded like pools, the majority had some significant water leakage and all had at least one "bad" wall or corner that let some water in.....that is except our Big House 6. We were bone dry, my extra ground tarp even eliminating the "waterbed" effect which itself was never a actual problem only a personal annoyance. It was a little hard to keep my smugness concealed from the people who a day before had ridiculed me for spending so much money on the "funny lookin' orange thing" when they had got such bargains on their "Bigger" , More cool features", "Better name" tents. I passed this time by taking my dry camp chair out of my Rain/Windproof Vestibule and reading the nice dry book I had laying on the floor of the tent while my Son in his nice dry clothes enjoyed his scouting activities. Sure you have to Be careful with the zippers once in a while so they don't grab, but is that really worth a rating star? I don't think so and when My 2 sons get old enough to crowd my Wife and I to much in the 6, there will be another Big House coming into the family.Pros: Roomy enough for 2 Adults and 2 Children to sleep Comfortably.Easy to set up.Good air circulationFull coverage fly makes for Weatherproof use in realistic conditions.Cons: (possible) I have always used this tent with footprint and vestibule so I do not know if performance is as good without.2 handed zipper operation recommended to avoid catching of of fabric on waterproof batting around entryways. ( this goes pretty much for any tent in this category and is really not a flaw but I guess you have to nitpick about something)Update 3-19-132 years and 9 week long camping trips later( each with at least 1 day of torrential rain), this baby is still in "Brand New" shape. with the only replacements needed being a few of the aluminum stakes for the guy lines which get eaten up by rocky Adirondack campgrounds each year and which i carry a ready supply of replacements always anyway (you can never have too few stakes and extra guy line, they are like the duct tape of camping). My 2 sons are getting to the ages where they are about to get booted out of the "Big House" . I am now looking at a Big House 4 for them to share.
