chinook tradewinds 6
By V. Hitt
With winds being a key concern of camping in Wyoming I read many reviews and was encouraged by those who felt this tent was stable in windy conditions. An experienced camper and a Wyoming resident for 56 years I know about wind. I don't expect perfection but I do expect when a top rated tent is properly set up and guyed out properly that a few gusts to 30 mph won't break 2 of the 3 poles and disjoint the third as happened on my first trip. I had set the tent up twice in my yard before using this tent and one of those was under windy conditions. A 6 ft cedar fence protected it from direct wind then but I should have heeded what I saw. The fiberglass poles are weak and undulate severely. On the first trip the first section (closest to the ground) of the blue and yellow poles splintered longitudinally and the black one came apart at the apex of the arch. I wasn't present for the mayhem but a post mortem revealed all pegs were still in ground leaving me to believe the extreme flexing (read weakness) of the fiberglass poles was the culprit in this failure.I am now trying to find aluminum replacement poles for this tent as it was a gift to my sweetie's daughter and her two young children. Thank goodness this failure happened to me and not to them! Positives: Very roomy tent. Full fly on a family type tent a real plus and the deciding factor for purchase of this tent. Looking forward to trying again with aluminum poles. The pearl: Pay the extra for the aluminum poles!!!
